I'll Hold Ed Wade to This...

The Phillies were kind enough to send me an automatically generated form email along with my refund for 2005 playoff tickets. Take a look at this excerpt from that email:

We look forward to 2006 with great optimism as Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jon Leiber and Brett Myers lead the way.

If Ryan Howard is going to "lead the way", that means Jim Thome is going to have to be GONE.

Let's see... overpaid, potentially washed up slugger past his prime... sounds like a candidate for the 2006 Orioles. I hear they're looking for a first baseman...

(NOTE: Ed Wade is now fired.)

Shut up! SHUT UP! Stop saying that! I hate you!

Seriously, I can see it happening. Come January, the Orioles have failed to trade for Adam Dunn or even Griffey, they couldn't sign any free agents except a backup catcher, and they're desperate for the new box-office draw. Along comes Smilin' Ed Wade and the Phillies, offering to knock a year off Jim Thome's deal and eat half the money, and all they want in exchange is Eric Byrnes and a couplea minor leaguers...

Thome at a press conference at Camden Yards in late January, smiling as he puts on an O's Jersey...

Thome striking out 3 times on Openin Day...

Thome at the All-Star Break: .232, 16 HR, 38 RBI...

Thome on the shelf for good by mid-August...but having managed to rack up 120 Ks to go along with his 22 HR and 66 RBI.

I can SEE IT HAPPENING. And the worst part is, I can see me talking myself into thinking it's a good idea for Thome to come over and DH, where he won't have to play the field, and who cares if he strikes out all the time...he's got something left. I can see it all, including the heartbreaking second half collapse that will be due, in no small part, to the great sucking sound that is Jim Thome stealing money from the Orioles.

Pardon me while I go sob quietly in the corner

What are the Phillies? Who is this Ryan guy? What's a baseball? I love oreos. Oh, wait, you said Orioles. Are they the diet kind?
